NUIG Charity Skydive at Galway Airport raises €10,000
08/03/2011NUI GALWAY CHARITY SKYDIVE AT GALWAY AIRPORT RAISES €10,000 EUR
NUI Galway Raise And Give (RAG) week took off this year with a Charity Skydive that raised in excess of €10,000 in aid of Ability West and The Alan Kerins Projects. The skydiving took place at Galway Airport on the last weekend of RAG Week 5th & 6th of March.
The NUIG Students Union organised a total of 46 university students who participated in the Skydiving fundraiser in preparation for Raise And Give Week and the brave group faced their fears of jumping from the aircraft as high as 10,000ft and freefalling at over 200km/ph while securely attached to an experienced and qualified instructor.
NUIG Student Sarah Dillion who completed her Tandem Skydive from 10,000ft on the Saturday at Galway Airport said "it was the most amazing experience of my life and everyone should do it. I can't wait to do it again".
Galway Airport facilitated the event and provided air-traffic control and full use of the airport in support of charity event. It is the first time skydiving has taken place at the airport in over 15 years and airport managing director Joe Walsh said "it was fantastic to have the NUIG students partake in the charity skydiving at our local airport and we are delighted to have been able to facilitate the event."
Skydive Ireland provided the skydiving and Chief Skydiving Instructor David Byrnes said "skydiving over Galway Bay is amazing, there's really no place like it and I'd like to thank the airport staff and NUIG students union for all their efforts. It was a really fun weekend."
