Galway Airport Manages to Safeguard Jobs

In these challenging times in the aviation industry, Galway Airport has managed to maintain and safeguard jobs

The general turmoil and downturn of the global and national economy has resulted in serious challenges for many industries. The air travel industry is no exception as over the last number of months this business has witnessed a reduction in air travel and the consolidation of routes by airlines right across Europe.

Joe Walsh, Managing Director of Galway Airport stated that "Galway Airport regrets having to implement the introduction of reduced working hours in a number of departments at the airport. However, in the current economic environment it is essential for the future of the business to take decisions in time so as to minimise the impact on our staff and respond to the ever changing business environment. The airport has in all of its discussions to date with its staff and Union representatives endeavoured to maintain jobs at the airport as it is imperative that we are in a position to safeguard for and achieve future growth when the aviation industry returns to a growth pattern. Galway Airport is a vital transport infrastructure for the City, County and wider region and it is incumbent on the Company to respond to the changing environment for the airport's future sustainability."

He went on to say that "The threat of industrial action is regrettable but the airport wishes to reassure its customers that the airport will continue to operate business as normal".
