Galway Airport wishes to confirm that the Runway Overlay Project has been completed on schedule and the airport has re-opened for business this morning at 05.30am, Tuesday 09th November 2004.

The Works which involved laying a 75mm Asphalt Surface over the length of the Runway, a total of 39,000 sq metres and the repainting of the Runway with new Runway Marking, was completed in a four day period from Friday 05th to Monday 08th November 2004

The completion of the Runway Overlay brings to a close this phase of Investment in the Infrastructure at Galway Airport which also saw the Installation of an Instrument Landing System, Replacement and Upgrading of the Airfield Lighting, The Construction of a new Taxi-Way onto the Runway, the Widening and Clearing of the Safety Strip either side of the Runway and the Erection of a new 4.5 kilometre perimeter fence.

Commenting on the completion of the Runway Overlay, Airport Chairman, Joe Higgins, stated that “I am delighted to see this Project completed on time and within budget. I would like to pay tribute to our Project Manager, Ciaran Lavery of Steve Cunningham & Associates and our main Contractors, Roadstone Provinces Ltd and all others who worked to bring this Project to completion. I would, again like to apologise to our airline customers and to our passengers for the inconvenience caused during the four day closure, however I am confident that the investment we have made will secure air services to Galway in the longer term. I would also like to thank my own Board Members, the Management and Staff of Galway Airport for their decisiveness and assistance in seeing this Project through to its end. We can now plan for continued growth at Galway Airport and we are looking forward to a new season with increased flight schedules and destinations for the people of Galway.” For further information,
