New General Aviation Hangar Opened

Last Saturday Galway Airport officially opened its new general aviation hangar facility which will be a new home for Galway Flying Club aircraft. The Mayor of Galway County, Cllr. Tom McHugh and the Mayor of Galway City, Cllr. Declan McDonnell performed the honours.

To celebrate the occasion a general invitation was issued to the members of Galway Flying Club, and the general aviation fraternity in Ireland and the UK to fly in to Galway Airport and to experience first hand what the airport has to offer in terms of an airport facility and also as a gateway to Galway City and the West of Ireland. During the day aircraft flew-in from places like Cregboy, Weston, Carlow, Navan, Birr, Abbeyshrule, Spanish Point, Trim, Tuam and Killimor in Ireland and Denham and Wolverhampton in the UK. 

Michael Corless as Chairman of Galway Airport reiterated the airport's commitment to general aviation in the region and the key role that Galway Flying Club plays in the development of aviation in the region. He said "the airport through its investment in this facility has invested in the future of general aviation at Galway Airport and I wish the Galway Flying Club continued success in the future through the use of these new hangar facilities".

Welcoming this latest addition to Galway Airport's infrastructure, John McGinley, Chairman of Galway Flying Club, said:  "Following our earlier beginnings at Oranmore Airfield, Galway Flying Club has been operating at Galway Airport's present site since 1974 and we have moved the club forward in parallel with the airport's ongoing development in the meantime.

The club has a non-profit ethos and functions solely as a result of the voluntary efforts of our members. I am pleased to acknowledge the support we have received over the years from Galway Airport, one result of which is the provision of this new hangar.

I would like to thank the staff and Board of Galway Airport for their efforts in bringing this general aviation development to a successful conclusion and we look forward to continuing Galway Flying Club's relationship with Galway Airport into the future and working with the airport to promote aviation in the West of Ireland. "

Later on Saturday evening the airport hosted a buffet supper for Galway Flying Club members and those that had flown in to be part of the celebrations.

As a result of the success of the event it is the airport's intention to hold similar fly-ins in the future to show case Galway Airport and the region.
