The Volvo Ocean Race, world's biggest sailing event, will stop over in Galway while it's taking place over a nine month period 2008/2009 .
This is the world's premier yacht race for professional racing crews and will be the 10th running of this ocean marathon. Starting from Alicante in Spain, the race spans some 37,000 nautical miles, stopping at 11 ports and taking nine months to compete.
The Galway Stopover Festival will take place in Galway City from the 23rd May - 6th June 2009, and the Docks area will be transformed in anticipation of the arrival of the spectacular Volvo 70 fleet following their leg across the Atlantic from Boston.
The Volvo Ocean Race is expected to be Ireland's biggest ever sporting/festival so far, with Galway city expected to welcome over 300,000 people over the course of the two weeks. Accommodation will be in huge demand so it's best to book your Galway hotel now!
