Healthy Flying

Healthy Flying - Tips

  • Drink plenty of water before and during the flight - dehydration is a common cause of headaches and discomfort.
  • Don't eat too heavily before or during a long flight - to avoid indigestion and hypertension.
  • To reduce jetlag, have some extra sleep before the trip, get some sleep during the flight and try to synchronise meal-times with the time it is at your destination.
  • Wearing flight socks or moving about every so often during the flight reduces the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). It is advisable to consult your doctor before taking any additional medications.
  • If you have any existing medical conditions, consult your GP before flying. You may, if you wish, get a Medical Information Form (MEDIF) from your airline.
  • Be alert to signs of DVT. If you have sore, swollen or discoloured legs, or pains in the chest, back or arms after flying seek medical advice.
